I hit "record" for an impromptu post-meet conversation with my co-host Natalie Monroe right after saying goodbye to our Impactup x Virtual Global Meetup guests. 🥹 (DM me for the YT link!) Our virtual meetup was one of 25 local #ImpactUp meetups happening around the world as an extension of the wider online @weareforgood Summit that happened during the day. 🌍 🌎 🌏 What a joy to have a virtual room of changemakers with us last night! 😊 Sometimes when we think of joining others online, on Zoom, on a webinar we may worry that it will feel cold, or it won't have that personal touch. 💻 Instead of a quiet, cold gathering our guests were immediately open to leaning into "community" saying, “I needed this space in my life today”, “We live the daily grind with tasks to do”, and “We are distracted by AI. THIS is the space that matters.” 🌟 In this little recap video, Natalie shares how good it was to be in community, sharing learned experiences, and getting to chat about what was really resonating. 💬 We lobbed some questions about TRUST and soaked into the answers coming from the room of changemakers. 🤓 🤔 Where do you experience strong shared clarity in your work right now? 🤔 Where does shared knowledge build trust on your team or organization? 🤔 When have you seen trust deepen because people showed up as humans, not roles? 🤔 What’s one small step you can take this week to deepen trust? On this #givingtuesday I am reminded of this post I made in the middle of the pandemic - September 2020 - as many in the event planning world struggled to stay afloat. Not only was I hurting from months of personal and professional loss - but many of our @candyeventconsulting clients couldn’t host the events and gatherings that are so important to their ability to survive - and thrive. I'm coming into September with so much gratitude for my family, friends, and our Candy circle of caring clients, community, and connections. I have felt your care, concern, and continued support over what became a difficult summer that included saying a final goodbye to my mom who passed on July 27. This summer it was also important for me to get good at "letting go" AND "leaning in" simultaneously. I was reminded of the power of "now" and felt the peace that comes from "releasing the results". (Thanks to Furkhan for that one!) Special to come together with my dear sisters over the last few months to support Mom through her health journey, to carry her through her time in the hospice to her death on July 27, and then - on Sunday August 3 - to send Mom off with stories and sharing at a special Celebration of Life. My hubby Tim and I did the long drive home from Abbotsford, BC to Calgary, AB on Monday. The whole trip was a visual treat and a wonderful way to transition back to home and work. If you’ve done the road trip you know the Three Sisters mountains near Canmore, AB are a stunning trio. And - on trips out here as a kid to camp - I adopted mountains as a representation of my sisters and I. On Monday we got to the Three Sisters just in time to see the moon shining behind the peaks and then snuggling up to the side as you can see in these shots. So special to see mother moon shining down on us and still standing strong beside us. Thanks Debi and Bev for being there and for being you through it all. 💗💗💗

“There is a joy in the journey, there’s a light we can love on the way.” - Michael Card On Sunday night - July 27 - after almost 6 weeks living with and caring for my mom in her home of Abbotsford, BC, she passed with a calm last breath that ushered her into the sweet beyond. Even at 92 Mom was still living a fearless life full of faith. There was no prayer left unsaid. There was no mountain too high for her to climb. And when she was committed to a cause, there was no turning back. There was a power to her presence that no one could deny. There IS joy in the journey. Our struggles are an integral part of how we can experience joy. And, what we might see as a final destination on our journey is only the beginning of another path. Journeying with Mom through her last days has been a time of profound growth for me. I say goodbye to this extraordinary woman with gratitude for what she taught me by word, by example, and by the occasional book left on my bedside table to “hint hint” read - lol. Thank you to each one of you who sent love, strength, energy, prayers, and peace through this difficult time. Special thanks to the staff at the Holmberg House Hospice where Mom spent her last week. 🦋 Fraser Health Authority / Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation 🦋

Some say “Keep looking up” but over the last few weeks rooming with - and caring for - my 92 year old mom, I have been reminded to keep my gaze on what will ground me, how best to stay present, and open to embracing a playfulness in the low points. 👣 Today marks one week since Mom moved into a warm, welcoming hospice. And - even though she’s facing what they call “end of life” here due to her aggressive breast cancer diagnosis - I know we’re both starting to look up 🙄 and welcome the “beginning” of the next part of her journey. She is transitioning well with so many precious conversations, deep connections, and is surrounded by care. So much gratitude for the family members, friends, neighbours, doctors, nurses, volunteers, drivers ... everyone ... who has make it easier to “keep looking up” on this difficult road. ❤️

When you dig a little deeper in your laptop bag and realize you flew 🛩️ into the eye of the storm exactly a month ago. 🌪️ #carryon #airportessentials Four weeks ago I took a flight from Calgary to my mom's home town to be with her through what became one of the most difficult times for her - especially at 92 - and for us as a family. She was diagnosed with cancer and it was time to rally as a family to care for her in new ways and coordinate new supports. For me this meant living with her 24/7 and giving this journey 100% of my energy. Even though there have been times Mom and I haven't seen eye to eye - it's amazing how looking her in the eye as she has felt fear, lost freedoms, and been frustrated with a body that hurts, legs that don't work, and a world that was changing fast - has deepened how I see her, love her, and feel her love. It has become crystal clear that my ability to nurture her in this time is not just because I've learned nurture myself as an adult. Sure, learning to care for myself has been core to my healing and living a healthy life. But it's the deep knowing that I am cared for - and nurtured - by my Creator and am surrounded by those who have carefully and consistently shown me what "nurturing" actually, practically, emotionally, looks and feels like. Yesterday I woke up on a caregiver pullout couch, Mom sleeping soundly beside me in her hospital bed, wrapped in the beautiful environment of her new hospice home, and soaking in the week of "miracle moments" that got us here. I got up and dressed early, searched where to find a soy latte, locked my teary eyes on the nurse and asked if it was ok for me to go "catch a coffee". Of course it's "ok". 🥲 I'm still in the eye of the storm - but feeling the calm that comes from a caring community. I'm rested and ready for whatever comes next. #anotherday #feelingnurtured #notdoneyet

Things to remember in the eye of my current storm* 🌪️ ... Have I slept? Have I eaten well? Have I moved my body? Have I read something good? Today I start with ... today. 😔 If you know anything about me, I'm not one to share much about the lagging days and low points - personally or professionally. I believe every day gives us an opportunity to show up to make the world kinder, brighter, and more connected place. I choose to wake up with gratitude every day. I intentionally click "refresh" on hard times with humour. I'm ready to get curious and seek out the silver lining. But some days it's harder than others to find the "refresh" button. We can't always shake the Etch A Sketch to recreate our reality. Life happens and sometimes we find ourselves simply along for the ride. This year has already been stretching me with opportunities for growth. I'm getting getting good at allowing new parts of me to surface. I'm exploring what I've felt I've been lacking and learning to love my life in a whole new way. But today I'm letting myself let the lessons simmer. Today I'm sitting at table at Starbucks in my Mom's small city in BC. Today I'm settling in to the reality that my Mom - at 92 - has cancer. Today I'm shifting from what I can't control to what choices I have. Today I'm sorting through what a month away from home will bring. Today I'm sore but secure that we - as a family - will grow stronger. When I arrived here from Calgary a week ago my Mom asked me what the "most exciting thing" is that has happened to me this year. Without skipping a beat I said it's been seeing and savouring the solid friendships that have been resurfacing in my life. There are so many who have met me behind the business busyness and have offered their love and light in often quiet - but always profound - ways. Thank you to you (...and to many more who are not on social media!). You are lovely examples of what community - and friendship - can look like. 💛

Ever feel the fear that what you're wanting to put into the world is not "complete enough" to see the light of day? Today I escaped to the crisp mountain air, with a view of the sun-kissed peaks, and - after starting to listen to Malcolm Gladwell's new book "Revenge of the Tipping Point" on the way - was reminded that nothing is ever completely finished. This book comes 25 years after his ground-breaking book "The Tipping Point" was published. He starts out by saying he has grown, learned more, and wrote this book as a response to bringing the concepts of "The Tipping Point" into the world as it is today. I have always respected his work but his willingness to revisit what he wrote back then bumps up my respect for him and his work once again! Coming out of an intense season of course creation, I have been managing through an uncomfortable feeling that what I created may not have been "enough". Maybe I've missed some key concepts, maybe I should have added more on this or that topic, maybe there is someone else I should have asked to contribute. (Yes, I'm a recovering perfectionist!) But in reflecting today - thanks to Malcolm's intro - I see that I'm doing the best I can with the information I have now. There will be time to revisit, refine, and reenergize what this course could be as I go ... and grow! My 2024 word of the year was EASE. 2024 wasn’t EASY … but as inspiring people and infinite possibilities came my way, I was reminded to “receive” and allow the year of EASE to unfold! To those of you that intersected with my story and inspired my journey this year, THANK YOU. I see you - giving everything that you are to your work, inspiring others by your leadership, and being an example of what connection and community really means. Your work, leadership, and example have – in turn – encouraged me to keep leaning into my work, leading in new ways, and setting an example of how events CAN become meaningful “connection points” where communities can gather and grow. I’m excited to see the broader shift toward care and connection in the events world. But building events with a “Connection First” foundation won’t happen by chance. We all have to work, lead, and show up every day ready to make a difference! My word for 2025 – SOAR – will be a reminder to ramp up in relationship with others, rise above the negative noise, and ready myself for the winds of change. I feel I got to know author B. Jeffrey Madoff when reading his book "Creative Careers: Making a Living with Your Ideas”. It was one on my pile of library books I had gathered for an event planning course I’ve been developing for creatives. On the faculty at Parsons School for Design, Jeffrey taught a course he developed called “Creativity: Making a Living with Your Ideas”. I’m grateful he put many of the concepts and conversations from his course into his book so creatives like me – who don’t have the opportunity to participate in his course – can still learn from his journey as a creative. Jeffrey began his career as a fashion designer. He was chosen one of the top 10 designers in the U.S. then switched careers to film and video production as the Founder & CEO of Madoff Productions. Jeffrey edited and directed award winning commercials, documentaries and web content around the world for clients such as Ralph Lauren, Victoria's Secret, Tiffany, Radio City, The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Harvard University, and Weill Cornell Medical College. Jeffrey’s current creative expressions is as Playwright and Lead Producer of “Personality: The Lloyd Price Musical” celebrating one of the most resilient and influential entertainers of our time, Lloyd "Mr. Personality" Price. I was in a rush to find mitts this morning and dug out these beauties just in time to shuttle my hubby to work and share the story attached to them! I received these mitts waaaaay back in the day when I had a job selling radio advertising to local businesses in the Edmonton area. I was a newly single mom, (extra!) motivated to make a living, and was given the gift of this new role. I had to make it work. I was ready to dive in, made a plan to promote a holiday deal to local businesses, printed some postcards, and parked myself at one end of Edmonton’s Whyte Ave to spend a few hours going door to door to make my sales calls. The day I choose was cold - “minus 30-something + windchill” cold - but I was determined to make it to the end of the long strip and make new connections that could help me grow my account list. I had been ducking in and out of the stores for some time until I arrived at a small store on a tucked away corner filled with cozy artisan winter wear and other fun local items. It didn’t take the shop owner long to realize how cold I was AND how important it was for me to keep sharing this sales package with the stores in the communtiy. What I remember is that she didn’t think twice before digging into the basket by the til to pull out this pair - I’m sure knitted with a love for their craft. She passed them to me saying, “all I ask is that if anyone mentions your mitts that you tell them about my store and give them one of my cards.” It didn’t take long for me to run out of her cards that day ... but I’m STILL telling the story. On this special day of giving I hung them at my coworking desk to remind me that kindness can be an everyday act. Giving is a mindset. Going the extra mile can be standing in place and giving the gift warmth and connection to a struggling stranger. Even as #givingtuesday comes to a close, don’t forget that it’s the every day - in every way - giving that matters. Let’s learn to see each other, share what we can, and trust that what we give is enough. It was for me. ❤️

It's almost time for Candy's SWEET 16 Virtual Disco Party this Friday! But first ... it's time to reflect ... and reintroduce myself! 👋 I am a life-long event planner - starting to "officially" plan events when I was 13 - and have been a Connection Strategy Coach through my biz for 16 years. This photo was taken just as I was launching @candyeventconsulting in 2008 from my then-home #winnipegmanitobacanada. This smile signified the end of playing small and the beginning of my life's work of serving and supporting anyone planning or promoting their own events for their business, organization, or group. 2020 brought me even deeper into my passion to help planners build events with a "Connection-First" foundation through a ground-breaking course and community called @theconnectionarchitect ... and the "What does connection mean to you?" conversations that started on my podcast in 2021 continue to inspire me - and #everydayeventplanners - in what is now Season 4 of The Connector Next Door Podcast for Planners. 2024 brought a new joyful challenge to create an asynchronous course for @albertauarts geared for creatives - of all kinds - who want to apply their creative skills in the events world! #comingin2025 I believe we are all creative and that when we apply an "artisan" approach to event planning we will inevitably connect better with ourselves, our purpose, our environment, and those we wish to serve through the events we plan. But what happens when an affordability crunch forces households to make tough decisions about spending priorities that limits their ability to access to those experiences? Do our social connections and sense of belonging suffer? How does our community continue to create, play and be entertained when the very people doing this work are also struggling?” Even though the questions can seem daunting, the discussion was thought provoking ... and hopeful. Much is happening to help ALL Calgarians access barrier-free experiences in the arts, sports, and culture but there is more work to do! Loved the opportunity to listen to and learn from panel which was moderated by Leslie Horton of Global News Morning and Global News at Noon. @leslie_horton_ @globalnews @globalcalgary Alex Sarian, President and CEO of Arts Commons encouraged us to ask, "Who’s not coming and why?" saying, "Connection doesn’t happen by chance". @alexsarian @yycarts Nicky Nash, Executive Director of Kids Up Front highlighted, "A ticket is a tool toward participation" asking, "How many sparks are we missing because we’re not including everyone?" and "We can achieve great things outside of our silos.” @kidsupfrontcalg Jay McNeil, President of the Calgary Stampeders shared how they are, "Meeting the community where they are at and asking how can they be part of the community” - without making assumptions! @jaymcneil50 @calstampeders As a Connection Strategy Coach, serving in-house and do-it-yourself event planners, it's important for me to understand my local landscape and then explore how I can make a global difference in crafting experiences that are more inclusive, diverse, equitable, and accessible so everyone - in every corner of our communities - can feel like they belong. What fun to join a growing community of "GenWellers" across this country who are stepping up to be part of the movement and solution to building a more connected Canada where everyone thrives! Monday was the kick-off to what @petebombaci, Founder of the @genwellproject calls Talk to a Stranger week which is happening across Canada until November 24. I participated in the conversations happening at at the Good Earth Coffee House - The Bridge and had so much fun meeting the Good Earth team, a few friendly strangers, and one familiar friend - @elijahlucian 🥰 Huge shoutout to national partner, Good Earth Coffeehouse @goodearthhq, for their support of Talk to a Stranger Week and for their belief in this Canadian Human Connection Movement and its connection to the work their stores, owners, and staff do each and every day. The goal of #talktoastrangerweek is inspire a nation to recognize that these little interactions each day can have a positive impact on the people around us and the world we live in. I've been Connection Strategy Coach for almost 16 years, and it's inspiring to see a national movement take shape that recognizes that little interactions like talking to strangers each day can have a positive impact on the people around us and the world we live in.
